281 MotorSports Road Tour Report w/pics & vids (FINALLY)
After fighting my stupid net, Ive got the vids loaded to StreetFire, freakin FINALLY! For the "skippers" here, the funny story is once again bolded.
So, as you read in my Rally Report, the original Saturday plan of doing Techco, then the Petersen museum and after, for me, seeing the Hollywood sign didnt come to pass. But, that was ok as the unplanned, unexpected alternative was FAR and AWAY better than any of that wouldve or couldve been.
Instead of the above, Pete and I went on a road tour. Officially called the, "Welcome to the OC" Meet & Greet and Cruise it was put on by Techco, the CA Mustang Club and 281 MotorSports. However, it appeared that the 281 folks were the ones in charge as far as coordination and guiding the tour. The route departed from Techco and ended at a Dave and Busters in Irvine. Included in the tour was a stop at the beach. Strand Beach, to be exact. Cruising along PCH was all the motivation I needed to do the tour, but the beach stop just put it over the stop, esp since I wasnt expecting to stop. Afterward, Pete and I broke off from the tour and continued on PCH for a few more miles before heading back to meet up with the BOGO gang for dinner.
Let it be known that this was the most fun Ive had doing ANYthing since the first time I went to a CART race at PIR back in 94. Its also the most fun Ive had with the car or ANY car Ive owned. I can NOT rave enough about the sheer fun, joy and excitement of this road tour. Its something Im going to savor for quite a while and remember indefinitely. I cant wait to do another one like it. And, just like I said back in 94 about how I would love to just be a "CARTHead" and follow the series from track to track each weekend like the DeadHeads would follow the Grateful Dead from city to city, Id love to do a tour somewhere around the nation every weekend. This was enough for me to want to come back next year. Even if we dont have a BOGO Rally and even if I dont bother with Knotts, I want to come back just so I can do the tour.
Unfortunately, I missed the best, "sweet spot" of the tour, despite my best efforts monitoring the cam. It was an almost 10 mile section that included a cool azz .3 mile "tunnel of trees". Pete remarked how it resembled Oak Creek Canyon in AZ.
I didnt know, but do now, that the cam has a one hour or 4 gig limit per continous film, whichever comes first, so just before the sweet spot it shut off. Im eagar to see the pics from the 281 guys and to see if they (or others on the tour) filmed so I can hopefully get a view of that missed section.
Just before the "sweet spot" we got stuck behind a Toyota 4X4. After a considerable time, I rhetorically asked Pete why the dude doesnt pull over and let us by. Moments later he did just that. Pete said I shouldve asked sooner. Then, ironically, same said Toyota caught up with us at the lunch stop.
Somewhere around the 3/4 distance we stopped on a long bridge to get pics. I was one of a very few (other than the organizers) to get out and take pics. Given the long line, I had to do the running I displayed the next day while waiting in the Knotts line. Once done, I was back in the car somewhat breathless. Pete had the sun on his side for most of the ride, so he was starting to bake. I turned on the air but after several moments it wasnt getting cold. Pete asks if I lost the belt, mentioning that he thought it was a seperate belt (its not, of course, but I wasnt thinking clearly). Anyway, the Shaker was still playing so I look at the gauges and freak out because I have no oil pressure. Dude, wtf, I dont have any oil pressure! Then I glance and see the tach is at rest on the peg. Derr, the engines off. WHEW! THAT was a panic.
Anyway, not only was the cruise fun, but, as mentioned, part of it was on PCH, so I got to see the ocean. But, not just see it, but get wet in it. The stop at Strand Beach was about 45ish mins. This was the first time since 7th grade Ive seen the ocean. Pete told me that one of the cruisers thought it was funny how I was so excited to see the beach. After a fairly long and steep hike down, I was just going to take pics and vid and be done with it. A girl (who was part of the cruisers with her guy) asked if I was going to get my feet wet. I said no, but shortly after said fugg it, stuffed my socks in my pocket, carried my shoes and got in the surf. Fuggin cool chit.
After, it was the hike back up and a group shot of some of the cruisers. We all saddled up and they went on with the remainder of the tour. We headed further up PCH. At this point, I blew off any more filming. Unexpectedly, it was mostly a rolling parking lot. But, I still liked it because I felt like I was back in college "cruising for the action" (tip o the hat to Rush). Checking out some of the "six foot blondes" (BHC) and "California Girls" (Beach Boys) and otherwise just seeing the "other world" that So Cal beach cites/life represents. I will say, and I mentioend to Pete (and later Don and Greg), how it looked like a freakin Mercedes Benz convention. Every 3rd or 4th car was a Benz, new or newish ones and the whole spectrum, save for the low end C Class cars. Eventually we were back on the freeway to meet the gang for dinner. The distance was 61 miles to the beach and an additional 12 down PCH.
A big contingent of this tour was comprised of CA Mustang Club members. Pete and I got to chat with a couple (cant remember the guys name, hers was Naydia sp?) while at the lunch stop. They came from NorCal and said that along the way more joined in. By the time they reached Grapevine they had 112 cars. Im going to join their site just to see if any of them got pics or vid and to try to connect with the couple we spoke with.
I want to again point out how cool this was and how generous? helpful it is for the 281 Motorsports folks to volunteer to plan, put on and guide the tour. Good folks. Pete mentioned that they said this is a once a year deal and this was the 4th year. Somewhere I swore I heard that this was the second year for this route. And as I said for the rest of the weekend, this tour wouldnt have been as enjoyable or successful without Pete.
Anyway, herewith the pics first, with commentary:
During the raffle giveaways:
Staging, awaiting to GO:
At the "lunch stop" about halfway:
Picture stop:
View over the side of the bridge:
At Strand Beach:
A true "beach shot" wouldve been nice:

DUH!!!
Very cool, and funny!!!!
I have seen this fender stripe on more than one occasion.
What is this??? Stripes designating car show events...I'm guessing??
On another car I saw some show decals over the top....any ideas??

What is this??? ...
These are "Pit" stripes. A favorite of Shelby drivers for some reason. Throw back to '60's racing and differentiating cars on the track (they all looked the same, very often the same color) for the pit crew.
(No, I don't have 'em)
quote from Shelby site:
It's sort of a nod to the past when racers (specifically Cobras/Shelby Mustangs) were all out on the track. It was hard to tell who was driving what due to similar paint colors. For pit crews to ID their drivers/cars they added the "pit stripes." Some have said these were tape, i've even heard it was as simple as grabbing a can of spray paint of whatever color was laying around..... Anyway, it's a little nostalgic thing some have chosen to do

As always, thanks, BOGOs. But, I sure hope youre all watching the vids fully. They are why it took so long to get this loaded. Great cars, great views, good music, funny commentary and me doing "air instrument" during one song in addition to "Caraoke". They add up to about an hour and 20 mins, so take your time over a few days to watch them.

Lol, thanks, bro. Of course youd catch that one. Actually, once we got on PCH I ditched The Doors and spun some Rush for a bit. Limelight, TS and Red Barchetta. Then I moved on to Def Lep for a song or two and finally killed the music.

Yeah, Sandie, its sounds corny, but it was indeed "breathtaking" when I reached the pathway. Seeing the ocean like that from an elevated position is soo cool. The broad, vast perspective was cooler than gazing upon the Grand Canyon for the first time. Seeing the "infinity" of the horizon is certainly a special kind of view and experience.
